Radio 2’s Tracks Of My Years Playlist

Radio 2’s Tracks of My Years playlist brings together the musical choices of the legendary rock and roll drummer Clem Cattini.

Robb Shenton advises:

Sad and terrible news indeed  – with the sudden passing of Drummer/Vocalist Des O’Reilly on New Years Day.
He was a member of a great early 1960’s Preston based band = ‘The Bobcats’; then in 1963 after introducing them to Record Producer Joe Meek- they were signed to and recorded by Joe at his 304 Holloway Road Studios in North London. Joe changed the band’s name from ‘The Bobcats’ to ‘The Puppets’, who then had several releases on the Pye Record Label.

The band were assigned to a Top Artistes Agency, ‘The George Cooper Organisation’ –  [Based in Soho Square in London’s West End]., who arranged appearances for the band,  and apart from their own gigs –  provided accompaniment on tours  including – Billy Fury,  Gene Vincent, Brenda Lee, Little Eva, Crispian St Peters, and many more A List UK and  visiting International artistes of the time.

Des was a great drummer/vocalist, who was skilled in his performing art and musical craft.
He was a great character, and although many miles away, Des and I kept in touch. Sheila and I received a lovely Christmas Card from him and partner Mos, and we always enjoyed the Fandalism Video’s that Des used to send us with his song performances.

In recent years he resided in South Australia with his partner Mos, and it is to her and family, and friends and music associates of Des, [including the surviving members of ‘The Puppets’ – Jim Whittle and Don Parfitt]  – that we send our sincere and heartfelt condolences.

He will be sadly missed.

With our best wishes and kind regards.

However, having worked closely with him in producing this book I have taken over its publication and we are working hard towards a date.  As soon as that is available I will let you know.

This is The Triumphs’ tribute to the work of famed record producer Joe Meek. Joe recorded many styles of music and ‘Meek and Wild’ offers a ‘jukebox’ full of great sounds, both vocal (15 tracks) and instrumental.(9 tracks).

In addition to popular chart toppers like Telstar and Have I The Right, the spotlight also falls on rarities such as Ray Dexter’s The Coalman’s Lament and, from the Tea Chest tapes, Geoff Goddard’s Here Come The Good Times. There are five original tracks, all inspired by the work of Joe Meek.

The Triumphs (Rob Bradford, Trev Faull, Ken Ledran and Ray Liffen) have as their special guest Dave Kaye, who recorded with Joe Meek. One of Dave’s tracks is He’ll Only Hurt You, a powerful ballad which he recorded with Joe, but which was never released at that time. Now you can hear it in a brand new arrangement with Dave backed by The Triumphs.

The album’s 12-page booklet includes descriptions of all the tracks and pictures of the band with many of the original Joe Meek artists that they have had the privilege of working with, including Clem Cattini, Dave Kaye, Malcolm Lenny (The Packabeats), Ray Dexter, Bobby Rio and Danny Rivers.
